Kreol is superbly thoughtful: it does not overturn existing forms, but remixes them. Dedicated to the Atlantic Ocean, the “mother heritage of humanity”, this remarkably flexible, musical album is a quest for the Grail of “Creolisation”, which the West Indian writer Edouard Glissant defines as “ethnic fusion along with something else that can never be defined” or it will be lost. “Jazz,” adds the novelist in an interview with Mário Lúcio, “came from everywhere; not in an imperative, sudden way, but in the form of traces. Music needs links, roots; the challenge is to surpass them without making them disappear. Music must run the risk of diversity.” These Creole musical genres have not been “imperial”, imposed a set form, adds Glissant, they have underlined ideas of suffering. They have combined Catholic churches and pagan trance; produced beguine, bossa nova, salsa and son, blues, swing, rap, calypso, rumba, morna and coladera, etc. - all genres that have left their imprint on Kreol.

On his journey, the writer and singer forged subtle bonds and sang - in Creole and Portuguese - with great names in Afro-Atlantic music: Ralph Thamar and Mario Canonge in Martinique, Toumani Diabaté in Mali, Pablo Milanés in Cuba, Teresa Salgueiro and Pedro Joía in Portugal, Milton Nascimento in Brazil and Harry Belafonte in the United States, before returning to Cape Verde with the help of Cesaria Evora.

Cantiga pa pedra

(Music and lyrics by Mario Lucio)

Pedra pedra
De parduero de obelisco de capela de pirâmide
De jade de xadrez de construçon de vulcon
De enxofre de sal de açucar de um pedrada
De Buda de moinho de mula faca e espada
De espuma de mar de algum lugar de lua
Fundamental divina filosofal preciosa
De Pedro de Sisifo de Jesus de Madalena
Esculpido lascado polido rolado
Ngabado sustedo ncunhado perto de ncunhal
Na sapato na bolso na mon
Riba cabeça
De alicerce
De pula e salta de brinca e trinca
De pedra pardo pa arde
parte
Perto prata pedra ingrata
Chã de Pedra
Pedra contra pedra
Que pena Pedra empena cristal de agua

Baxo de agua mole
Coraçon de pedra
Pedra riba pedra
Pedra simples pedra
Pedra bruta pedra
Brita pedra podre
Grita um pobre podre
Nem ké pa pedra podre
Um pobre pode grita
Pedra pedra

Pierre contre pierre
Désolée la pierre isolée
Cristal de l’eau
Cœur de pierre
Sous l’eau chutant
Pierre sur pierre
Pierre simple pierre
Pierre brute pierre
« Pierraille pierre pourrie »
Un Pierre quiconque a crié
Au moins à une pierre pourrie
Un pierre quiconque peut crier
Song to a stone

Stone, stone
Of a hovel of an obelisk of a chapel of a pyramid
Of jade of chess of the construction of the volcano
Of sulphur of salt of sugar of hashish
Buddha’s mineral
Of mills for sharp knives and swords
Of the sea’s foam somewhere on the moon
Fundamental, divine, philosophical, precious
Of Saint Peter, Sisyphus, Jesus and Madeleine
Stone, stone
Sculpted chipped polished rolled
Praised supported minted and mounted
In shoes in pockets in hand
Over your head and under your feet
Jumping hopping joking cracking
Brownstone, burning stone
Silverstone shining
Chã de Pedra
Stone against stone
As alone as a crystal of water

Under soft water
There is hard hearth
Stove upon stone
Stone nothing but the stone
Stone brute stone
Gravel brittle stone
One poor man says
Even if it’s just to a brittle stone
A brittle man can scream
Stone, stone
